A Visit to Hong Kong
Pictures and musing from a teacher in Hong Kong
Day Four |
Today I am teaching a workshop at
the Hong Kong Cybercampus. The Cybercampus is a project of Dr. PC Wong who is a
professor at the Chinese University. I have not met him yet, but have learned a
great deal about him. The Cybercampus is funded by a project in Hong Kong called the
Quality Education Fund, or FEQ. On the first full day of my visit to Hong Kong, I
visited an exposition of schools and other projects that are using QEF funding.
The picture to the right is of the street below the Cybercampus. The long glassed in area in the pictures is the train
station. This train will take you to China, eventually to Beijing. |
The Cybercampus is a computer lab that is used for staff development and also by
teachers who are working on Internet projects. They also have a staff of very
tallented programmers who are building web resources for educators. Most of the
pages are in Chinese. This is a concern for educators here, the fact that there is
so little content on the Net that is in Chinese and from a Chinese perspective. They
do not like getting all of their information on the web from the USA or Europe.
Cybercampus is working on providing more content in their language. |
All but one of the participants in
today's workshop teach in Chinese schools. They all had very good English skills,
but I still had to talk fairly slowly -- except when I got excited about what we were
talking about. They also wanted me to sign my book. I learned to sign it in
Chinese. The workshop ended at 5:30 and I
walked back to my hotel, and went to sleep. So I have no more pictures for day four.
