Statement of Problem:
The classroom is a puzzle, and there are already
too many pieces to fit. Now we are asking teachers to integrate into that over stressed
puzzle something as global and nebulus as the Internet.
On top of that, the Internet brings with it brand
new problems:
- Protect students from inappropriate and dangerous
information
- Evaluate the information brought into the
classroom through the Internet
- Protect student's identities on the Internet
- Deal with the sometimes wasted instructional time
that students spend surfing for information
- Deal with brand new copyright and plagiarism
issues
A Solution:
Teachers need to be able to shape the Internet,
to mold it so that it fits into the puzzle of the classroom, and perhaps even serving as a
mortar in the attempt to seamlessly bind other puzzle pieces together.
ClassWebs are web pages or sites created by
teachers to help their students attain specific educational objectives. ClassWebs:
- Proactively point the student in the direction of
educationally appropriate Net resources
- Provide for students a work space for conducting
their activities, in many cases collaboratively with other students or experts
- Provide a context for what the student is
learning, integrating the task into the general educational expections and into real-world
problems
- Can be constructed more easily and in less time
than it takes to prepare a paper work sheet
