Figuring Out Physics : Connections
Introduction
Often, when studying a science in high school, we focus so much on the concepts to be learned that we miss the interconnectedness of it all. In particular, the study of physics can become so intense that concepts of motion and force become isolated from the physical world they help to explain. One way to maintain the connection between specific physics concepts and the more general understanding of Nature is to study the history and development of science as a means of answering fundamental questions.

Project 2061 is a group that is dedicated to improving math and science education in America. They published a book called Science For All Americans, which outlined what a scientifically literate American should know. The following is a simplified list from that book that outlines the nature of science:

The Nature of Science

  • The Scientific World View
    • The world is understandable
    • Scientific ideas are subject to change
    • Scientific knowledge is durable
    • Science cannot provide complete answers to all questions

  • Scientific Inquiry
    • Science demands evidence
    • Science is a blend of logic and imagination
    • Science explains and predicts
    • Scientists try to identify bias and avoid bias
    • Science is not authoritarian

You recently read chapter one, The Newtonian Universe, from the book Six Roads from Newton: Disoveries in Physics. In the chapter the author, Edward Speyer, does a wonderful job of reviewing the progression of science from acient Anthropomorphism to mondern science by focusing on physics, and more specifically, mechanics, the study of motion.

Your task will be to respond to the prompt below in the work space section of this webpage with insights gained from the reading and your personal experience. In addition, you will be expected to react to the responses posted by your classmates. The overall goal of this activity is to further gain insight into the nature of science and to develop a better view of physics as a fundamental science.

The web resources below may help you gain more insight into the nature of science and the more recent advances in physics.

Title Description
Project 2061 - Science for All Americans Project 2061's Science for All Americans is a landmark book that not only describes what scientifically literate Americans need to know and understand, but also outlines the connections of science to math, technology, and social studies.
A Century of Physics This site is the web version of the poster series hanging along the entire wall of my room. It details the development of physics over the last century including topics like quantum mechanics and nuclear physics. It provides an intensive look into the physics and the physicists that have shaped our modern world.
Intro to Science and Science Methods This site is designed to help you become familiar with a few of the concepts regarding the definition of science, scientific thinking, and the methods of science.
Work Space
Please post an original message, in which you describe how the web readings impacted you personally from your vision of the world.

After you have posted your original article, read at least two articles from two classmates, and respond with some personal insight about their reactions to the web readings. Thanks!
