Biomedical Technology--Genetics
Introduction
Biomedical Technology -- Genetics Unit

The student will be able to:

  1. Utilize resources to identify ethical issues of genetic therapy.

  2. Utilize resources to identify current issues surrounding the Human Genome Project.

  3. Utilize resources to identify the role of DNA in genetics.

  4. Discuss the pro's and con's of genetic therapy.

  5. Utilize resources to identify careers (including titles, description of job tasks, educational requirements, salary range, and desirability) within the field of Biomedical Technology.

A search tool that may be used if you do not receive enough information.

A web site that may be used if you need more information on gene therapy/technology.

A web site that may be used if you need more information on the Human Genome Project.

Title Description
* * Wiley Journal Onnet Examines issues of gene therapy development and medical uses. Includes ethical issues and history information. * *
* * Sciencekomm's MedBioWorld Site for medical & bioscience journals, associations, & databases. Most links/journals are very technical. * *
* * Your Genes, Your ChoiceYour Genes, Your Choices describes the Human Genome Project, the science behind it, and the ethical, legal, and social issues that are raised by the project. This internet book was written as part of the Science + Literacy for Health project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Contains scenario based issues. * *
* * Learn and Explore BiologyBiology/Chemistry tutorials starting with the basics, college tutorias with VR applications and Java. Also Chem-4-Kids for basics and a 3D virtual Reality Biological Molecules. * *
* * The Genomics Lexicon Database of terms and definitions used in the study of genetics. The Genomics Lexicon, a joint project of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and the Foundation for Genetic Medicine, Inc. (FGM), is a searchable database of terms and definitions. * *
* * Human Genome Information Project Homepage of a Human Genome Project site with links to information on the human genome, including: mapping development, Medicine, Legal/ethical issues, and education. * *

2. What are some of the ethical concerns surrounding the use of gene therapy?
3. List the career in biomedical technology that most interests you, AND the career that least interests you. Address such issues as work environment, salary and benefits, job tasks.
4. On which web site or web link did you find the best information on genetics and DNA? What made this site "best"?
5. **Extra credit** If you needed gene therapy to survive, but it would cause danger to your future offspring, would you use it?
